OUR
LADY'S CHURCH
(Stationstraat)

The modern Our Lady’s
Church, designed by G. Vanden Weghe in 1937, was built for the parish
of Our Lady, established in 1913. Emilie Mulle de Terschueren donated
the lot to the church-fabric.
The
design of the church, with a tall saddlebacked tower, is dominated by
the Gothic arch and classic building materials such as stone and brick.
In 1938, M. Vander Meeren revived the front with four monumental whitestone
statues of evangelists and a small one of Our Lady with Child, placed
on a higher level.
Vander Meeren also sculptured the figure of Christ above the high altar,
and the stylized St. Theresia in the side aisle. A bronze Stations of
the Cross, statues of the Apostles and the screen of the baptistery are
also worth the visit. The leaded windows are the work of C. Van Hevel,
R. Vande Weghe and G. De Sander.
