THE FRANCISCAN CHURCH (Minderbroedersplein)
[
Tourism ]

A lane with lime trees, planted in 1776, leads to the austere Baroque church of the Franciscans, built in 1707. In 1624 four Friars settled in the Kortrijkstraat. In 1644 they moved to a new monastery on the ‘Poekhof’ across the street. When the monastery and the chapel burnt down, the monastery was soon rebuilt, but a new church did not arise before 1727.

Eyecatchers in the Baroque interior are the communion rail and the balustrade of the organ loft, both works of F. and L. Debosschere.
