SHERMANTANK
[
Tourism ]

On the “Generaal Maczekplein”, near the “Lakenmarkt”, an authentic Shermantank was set up as a monument and as a reminder of the liberation by the First Polish Panzer division under the command of general Stanislaw Maczek. General Maczek has also been immortalised in a bronze creation of Jef Claerhout. On occasion of the fiftieth anniversary of the liberation of Tielt and its region, the statue on the “Polenplein” was unveiled on the liberation day, on 8th September 1994.
Many commemoration places now still remind of the 8 Polish soldiers who fell in Tielt. They found their final resting-place on the military cemetery in Tielt.
The Shermantank has been restored as a monument on the General Maczekplein on the 8th of May 2002.
